The Principles of Bazi Analysis
Bazi Fortune-Telling is a form of traditional Chinese metaphysics that predicts an individual’s life destiny based on their birth time, expressed in the form of four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches (known as the Four Pillars and Eight Characters). Its core theories include the systems of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, Yin-Yang, and the Five Elements.
The practice of Bazi analysis originated in the Tang Dynasty, when Li Xuzhong pioneered destiny prediction using the year, month, and day pillars. During the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty, Xu Ziping introduced the hour pillar, establishing the complete Four Pillars system. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the publication of foundational texts such as “Yuan Hai Zi Ping” and “San Ming Tong Hui” marked the maturation of its theoretical framework.
Based on a person’s Bazi, analysts determine various aspects of their life, including family relationships, personality, marriage, career, and wealth, assessing their nature, quality, and potential. Bazi analysis thus involves a comprehensive interpretation of the destiny represented by the Eight Characters using relevant theories, through which the fortune, auspicious or ominous outcomes, and life tendencies of the individual are inferred.
